DETAILS

Moving Silence is a platform for contemporary silent film culture created by musicians, artists and film professionals based in Berlin. Our aim is to create a new ground for contemporary silent movies, by reconnecting the roots of cinematography to current aesthetics of image and sound. Our work is based on an expanding network of people across cities, who collaborate with us for the organisation for moving silence events.
For a better understanding of our thinking, please visit this document:
Can silent cinema still exist today and what defines a silent film?

Our next Moving Silence festival will take place in Athens/Greece from March 21st until the 26th, 2012. The program will include different thematic film blocks such as "(De)construction of Space" experimental films, "Silent Moves" video dance films, "Human Connections" narratives from Germany, "Athens Impressions", open sections that feature local film-makers and it also presents a big variety of international and local musicians. Some of them will perform with their self build experimental instruments.

We wish to create a trailer, announcing our festival and therefore we wish invite greek or greek based artists to send us their video proposals. Here is some basic information for our competition.

Award
The winner will receive 500 Euro.

Theme
The trailer should have a connection to contemporary silent film or deal with an idea on that subject. It can tell a small story itself, but not necessary. The trailer can be also athmospheric or abstract. There doesn't need to be a connection to the actual program we are presenting in Athens but it is possible. It should make people curious about a festival on contemporary silent film.

Duration
The duration should be around one minute, not longer than two minutes.

Technique
The technique is free of choice.

Format
In the end it has to work well as an internet-clip and as a digital projection on the cinema screen. A Quicktime-file is most convinent, but also .avi .mp4 etc will do.

Sound
The use of sound or no sound is a free choice. In case sound will be used the producer of the trailer has to make sure that he has cleared all the rights.

Copyrights
Make sure that there are no uncleared third party rights to the images, fonts and sounds. We recommend that you use only material that is produced by yourself. We might not be able to include a trailer into the competition that could be a risk in terms of uncleared rights for any of the used media.

Language
The trailer can be in Greek, English or both.

FAQ

Shall I add festival dates and moving silence url as part of the titles somewhere in the beginning of the movie?
It is important that these info is mentioned in the trailer. Where you place it is up to you. For sure the end is a good place for those kind of information. You can surprise us. Therefore we do not give many guidelines.

If you want to be on the save side you can research how festival trailers are usually structured and orient yourself on those. But you can also just create the dramaturgy of a trailer yourself.

Important is that it needs to serve the function of a trailer that announces our silent film festival in Athens. How that can work is up to you.

How do you you want me to send the file?
Please upload the Trailer into your YouTube account as a public video that people can also vote on. Send us the url to the video so we can embed it!

Where shall I mention my website address?
Where ever you think its best.

Where do I need to use the font of moving silence?
Definitly for the logo of moving silence. The rest is up to you. Just make sure there is no copyright infringement risc with "illegal" fonts.

Is it true that you need a youtube account in order to like a video or is there a way to use the "like" button without having an account?
yes, it is true that a youtube account is needed in order to be able to press thumbs up or thumbs down. In case all your friends have vimeo accounts and you want to post it on the vimeo platform we can add the vimeo "likes" to the online result of your trailer.
