DETAILS FOR THE CONTEST

Moving Silence is a platform for contemporary silent film created by musicians, artists and film professionals based in Berlin. Our aim is to reconnect current aesthetics of image and sound with the roots of cinematography. This year we like to support a greek or greek based film-maker for the creation of a new silent movie. Therefore we ask you to present your idea for a silent film that you would like to create. The film can travel the world within our international events in the future.
For a better understanding of our thinking, please visit this document:
Can silent cinema still exist today and what defines a silent film?

Our next Moving Silence festival will take place in Athens/Greece from March 28th until the 31st, 2013. The program will focus on different themes such as animation films, vocal&voices and land&soundscapes.

Here is some basic information for our competition.

Award
The winner will receive 1000 Euro. 500 Euro will be paid after the winner is announced on March 29th, 2013 – the second 500 Euro when the film is finished, not later than February 28th, 2014.

Format
The film should be a contemporary silent film & able to stand on its own in a silent screening. What medium you choose for production is free of choice. The final result should be able to be screened in a digital format.

Theme
The film's thematic focus is free of choice.

Duration
The duration is free of choice.

Technique
The technique is free of choice.

Sound
The final film has to be totally independent from sound and will be screened silent only. Nevertheless the film-concept might already contain a specific audio-concept for a live sound performance during the screening.

Language
If written language is important the final film should have English titles or subtitles.

Pitching Format
Every participant has 3 minutes to explain the basic idea of the film. You can do the pitching only by talking about your concept but we strongly suggest that you prepare some visual material & create a teaser that explains what you have in mind.

Collecting Votes
Put your teaser online so people can vote online for it and you collect more votes. To collect Votes online use Youtube, Vimeo or Facebook! Some pre-produced film scenes could help to convince the audience to vote for your film concept. Announce the pitching event on March 28th, 2013 at Goethe-Institut Athen were also votes will be collected from the festival audience. We will help you by embedding your teaser on our Facebook page of the film pitching. From there you can send it to your supporters and collect "likes" that will count for the online voting. Please mark your clip with the following tag "Silent Film Pitching for Moving Silence Festival Athens 2013" !

Voting
The winner will be calculated out of the following sources:
1/3 online voting on the teaser videos in Youtube, Vimeo & Facebook. The Youtube voting is simply the amount of thumbs up minus thumbs down. We also add the counts of Vimeo and Facebook likes.
1/3 Voices of the Moving Silence Organization Team
1/3 Voices by the audience at the Pitching event to be held on March 28th at Goethe-Institut Athen.

FAQ

If I have just a script for a silent movie what i am supposed to send you as a teaser?
An online teaser will give people an idea of the film you are planning to create. You could speak directly to the camera, explaining very briefly who you are and what you like to create. Like that the people who vote will understand better who is the person behind the film. If you have already some footage, impressions, photographs, storyboard, sketches, etc. you can use it & it will help the audience to understand better what kind of images & aesthetics you are interested in.

Can I come and pitch my film concept on 28th at the Goethe-Institut even if I didn't upload a teaser before 26th?
Yes, but you need to register yourself until March 26th. Therefore please notify us with your name and project title via an e-mail to info@movingsilence.net !
If you upload a teaser after this date you still have time to collect online-votes until noon of 29th.

If I win the production grand – may I choose the musicians for the live screening myself?
Yes, of course. As the author of your silent film you are free to develop a specific audio concept for the live soundtracks, prefer certain musicians and ways of music interpretation as long as it is practically possible to make this happen. For example it would be inappropriate to limit the possible live interpretations to the London Symphonic Orchestra ONLY. ;)

Shall I add festival dates and moving silence URL as part of the titles somewhere in the teaser?
We suggest that you mention the festival and invite people to come to the pitching event on March 28th, 2013. For sure the end is a good place for those kind of information like:
- Moving Silence Festival Athens
- March 28th - 31st, 2013
- venues: Goethe-Institut and Beton7
- www.movingsilence.net
We can provide the moving silence font, the logo of Goethe-Institut, Beton7 and moving silence.
Download the logos and font here: Zip-File

How do you you want me to send the file?
Please upload the teaser into your Youtube or Vimeo account as a public video! Send the link to info@movingsilence.net so we can also add it on the Facebook page for the pitching contest.

Where shall I mention my website address?
Where ever you think its best.

Is it true that you need a Youtube account in order to like a video or is there a way to use the "like" button without having an account?
Yes, it is true that only people that are logged into a valid account can vote. It is the same for Youtube, Vimeo & Facebook.
